  • Hollyhocks - 2nd flowering

I planted these last year, loads of rust on them though they produced flowers all summer and the bees loved them

I cut them down to the base after collecting the seeds, though I think that if I'd cut them back when the basial growth had started appearing - Rather than leaving them to produce seeds - They would have all produced a 2nd flowering, currently 2 out of 7 have flowered.

A really lovely bonus Yes the bees do love them and I enjoy watching them as they get completely covered in pollen. Lots of Hollyhocks grow in our neighbourhood so guessing that the hideous heavy clay soil is no problem for them. Shame they are prone to so much rust though.
LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.
