  • Growing jasmine with clematis?

    Hello,

I bought a clematis "The President" a few months ago to grow up a trellis to hide my bins. It wasn't doing too well, and looked bare, so I went out last week to buy an evergreen jasmine to grow instead.

My plan was to dig up the clematis and put it in a pot, and grow the jasmine in its place. However, the clematis is now shooting up and clinging on, so nwo it seems a shame to dig it up and thwart its growth. However, it's still not lush enough to screen off the bins.

I was wondering, is it possible to grow the two up one trellis?

Thanks in advance, O Gardening Gurus...

I Have done the opposite, I have a clematis (Tangatica) growing up through an established jasmine. theory behind it, was they flower at different times so colour in that part of the garden is extended.
    Hope this helps.

      Thanks very much.

I was a bit worried that the jasmine might smother the clematis. Will try this.

I have planted my climbers about 50cm apart.

I've got a clematis and a honeysuckle planted together in a big dolly-tub (like a galvanised bin) and climbing up some mutilated conifers in the back garden. They seem happy enough together

What works very much depends on what species/cultivars are involved. C. tangutica tends to be rampant or a non-starter (it has never done well with me), and there are several plants sold as hardy jasmine - they vary from a very modest slow-growing lax shrub to a rampant climber that will grow to over 20 feet.

I often planted 2 together in my old garden. I had a rose arch with a rose and a clematis over one side and a jasmine and clematis on the other. I found it very successful.

Thanks all - I've put the jasmine in now, but only about 30cm away.
I'm training the clematis over to one side of the trellis. Hopefully when the jasmine gets going, it won't smother it.
