  • Growing flowers from seed to put in hanging baskets

Sorry if any of these questions are silly, but I know very little about growing flowers. I originally thought I would only grow fruit and veg, but then started thinking about bees, and how pretty flowers would look in the garden. This led to me buying rather a lot of seeds from Lidl

I will be planting some of the flowers in hanging baskets, but I assume I will need to wait until they are fairly big, so they don't fall through the holes (I have the Easy Fill baskets). I don't have much room inside, so when they are big enough/it is warm enough to put them outside, that's where they will go. Unfortunately I don't have a greenhouse, so I was going to use a blowaway, with a fleece cover on at night. Will they be okay if I do this?

The instructions only say when to sow and when they flower, there isn't much about planting out or hardening off, so I'm not entirely sure what to do or when it is safe to put them outside.

    Thanks for any advice.

What varieties of flower seed do you have Indigo?

      They certainly are popular: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Easy-fill-ha.../dp/B004UZPZZQ

The plants won't fall out if you firm them in properly into the compost

Well, you plant them out when they look big enough & tough enough to cope, and after your last frost date if they are "tender" aka "half hardy"

You must harden off for 7-10 days anything that's been grown indoors/greenhouse, before it goes outside.

If you have HHA (half hardy aka tender, eg not cold-tolerant) plants, then you must wait until after your last frost to start hardening off. Don't rush it.

I always wondered how people got flowers to grow out of the bottom

Thanks all, and sorry for the slow reply. I've got quite a few seeds, so I'll try to list them later today.
