am planting out my front garden (thanks Grapes for advice on shrubs) and was wondering how to fill the gaps - a friend has suggested that Sedum can grown really quickly and will look pretty.

would welcome advice - it's my first garden, I'm much better at veg!

Bugle (or ajuga reptans if your being posh) is a good ground cover plant even under trees. If you get the one called burgundy glow it has lovely bronze leaves and it spreads quite fast as well. Its also easy to pull bits up and you can just then poke them in elsewhere.

personally, I hate bugle and sedum (I hate pink).

For ground cover, I prefer annuals because the display changes every year. It's more work, though.
