| We picked out some sunflower ( i think it was about 12) seeds from a bag of bird seed that we had and planted them a couple of weeks back. Well most of them have germinated and all that remains now is to see what find of sunflowers we get from them. Not got any idea what variety is cheapest and hence would be more likely to be used as bird food but will keep you updated and we'll see. Only really growing to feed the finches come deadhead time anyway.

| We have seen fields of them in France, they grew about 5-6' tall with huge heads and were for bird food. It was a spectacular sight.

| I see a chellenge coming on. Why doesn't each grape grow a/some sunflowers from bird seed and see who can grow theirs taller than me (as in the actual me, not my sunflower that I will now grow from bird seed). In the interest of fairness, I won't even wear my heels.

| Might even see if my printers can make a lifesize cut out of me that I can send round the country for grapes to measure up.

| Not very eco though. You'd have to find a power source to power the light you'd need to put on the top of it to warn low flying aircraft.

| I've bought sunflower seeds this year for the first time since my kids were small, the plan is to disguise a rubbish looking part of the plot until we have time to sort it, and to save the seeds for the birds. I never considered pinching the bird seed, but I might grow a few just to see what happens |

| ......and the experiment grows. I looking forward to this

| Well done whigger, great idea. Can't believe I never thought of growing sunflowers from "edible" seeds. I know the seeds I bought recently for my bird feeder say "no grow formula" on the bag, but I'm not sure it includes sunflower anyway. You could have your own sunflower version of the Chileman challenge.

| Well the sunflowers from the bird seed are definitely NOT no-grow as they're already about an inch tall..........does that mean i'm winning already?

| Think we've got to establish some rules here. Do we all agree that the seeds must come from a packet of birdseed?

| Hi Folks Been reading on /off for about a month and have recently moved house with a large garden and have decided to take the plunge and try a bit of gardening ( i would love to try an allotment but there's not one here), very green so expect loads of questions . My daughter loves sunflowers so we're in agreement and we're going to try one or two this year if you'll have us.( i prefer the idea of vegs but if it gets my little 'un interested in the outdoors then sunflowers it is ) |
