  • clematis from seed?

has anyone had success and tips about growing them from seed?

in the past i grew one very successfully 'radar' from thompson and morgan. last year i got some seed online which were self collected. i sowed them in pots and left them in a cool frostfree greenhouse last september. not much has happened since then

    any tips would be grateful

I had a free packet last year from T&M, I can't remember the type offhand though I think they were supposed to be dwarf ones. I put them in the heated propagator around this time of year, and they germinated fine. Unfortunately I can't say how well they grew after that though because I cooked them
I turned the electric off, but forgot to remove the lid one day. The forecast had been for a cloudy day, but the sun came out and the temp in the greenhouse went up to 40, so even hotter in the propagator. When I got home from work even the soil smelled cooked
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Hiya, I have grown radar love too and they seemed pretty easy but I think some of the other types are harder to get going.
Since they have had a time of cold maybe if you brought the seed tray indoors now to a windowsill propogator they might be fooled into thinking its spring and germinate. They may well germinate in spring anyway.
Don't give up on the seedtray, some things take up to 3 years plus to show.

put the clematis pots into an electric propagator at the week end and one seed has germinated only 20 more to go!
