I think they must be as I planted some last summer to grow up my wall, they pretty much seemed dead for the whole time and I pruned them very late, and I wasnt sure if they would have survived the cold weather we had....

....but it is well and truly alive and already starting to produce flower heads, even though it is a late summer flowering variety Thats the kind of plant I like!!!

Just a tip - plant clematis deeper in the ground than you buy in the pot - so you are burying the lower 2" of stem - then if they get the clematis wilt the plant stands a chance of re-growing from the roots. I grow the species rather than hybrids - species don't suffer as much.

As Jeanied said, keep the roots covered preferably with gravel or the likes, they like their feet to be cool. Another thing to check on is the pruning of Clematis. I can't get my head round it myself but depending in the variety you either prune it hard every year, part prune it, or don't prune it at all..........I think....

Plant with 'Feet in the shade, head in the sun.' Prune after flowering, I think. If it flowers late, prune next spring. Lovely plants.

Do you mean hardy, or do you mean evergreen?

Clematis die back over winter, but come again in the spring, so they won't give screening all year round.

Unless they have Clematis Armandii on their little plant label. (Evergreen variety!)

Jeanie, thank you! I thought armandii was pink, (I hate pink) but now I'm going to find a couple that are cheaper than this one (oooh, just remembered I have £10 garden gift vouchers)

It is a little more delicate than the other Clematis, TS - so needs a more sheltered spot -I had mine in a NW facing corner of the garden. If it is happy it does get a bit exuberant, so strict refereeing is necessary. But the perfume and the lovely flowers make up for a bit of trouble.

Funnily enough I've just been invited to a clematis talk this evening TS - shall I ask for you? Evergreen, white, able to stand up to wind blasting?
