  • Chipping For Paths

    Hi All,

I see a lot of you put wood chippings down on your paths. My allotment does not supply these.

How do you get yours? Through your allotment, and do they buy them in or do they acquire them some other method?

    Thanks for your help

    Duvy

The only chippings I have used are ones that I have bought from the local diy store or garden centre. I suppose tree surgeons might have chippings to get rid of. Ask on freecycle?

I'm lucky in that the garden of our recently acquired house is surrounded by trees which need to be removed, so the tree surgeon is chipping them for us and then transporting to the lotty for me.
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
      Pumpkin pi.

Tree surgeons!! I've a local one, to save on petrol he dumps them in my yard if he's working close by. Worth ringing around a few. Mine also dumps at the local allotments.

Same as Scarlet - local tree surgeons. They took down some trees for me recently and chipped the small stuff. We now have an arrangement that if they're working nearby, they'll ring and ask me if I want the chippings and logs. Otherwise, theyl take them to an allotment.
Ring around - some charge for a trailer load, mine doesn't but I give him beer money sometimes.

Same here - local tree surgeons off-load them at our site. We have a big site and get through quite a few trailer loads.

Mine doesn't drink so he gets eggs, jam and cakes - he also stops for coffee

I need to source some myself come April/May....perhaps the sawmill in Hulne Park which is next to the allotment will do them?

Like others, I get a free supply from a local tree surgeon. I just emailed a load of tree surgeons and a very helpful guy emailed back. He has basically said that I can have some whenever I want, I shouldn't have to wait more than a week at any time. He says it is helping him as he needs to get rid of it but I do give him some beer money, I don't think it's a bad exchange for 3 tonnes of woodchip delivered a few weeks ago. Shame he can't deliver me a new back and hips after shovelling, barrowing and spreading the stuff

Definitely worth just sending a random email out to any tree surgeons in your area, they all need to get rid of the stuff. Some will want to charge but there's bound to be some that will be glad to be rid of it.
Posted on an iPad so apologies for any randomly auto-corrected gobbledegook

I think it's unlikely that a sawmill will have a shredder but unless you ask you never know.

I'm a girl.....what do I know about gadgetry and what goes on in industrial places I just assumed lots of trees and wood =chippings? I'll ask anyway the next time I'm passing......if anything it'll give the guys a laugh....or they may know who does do them

Good idea about emailing tree surgeons.....I'll do that too once we get closer to the time of sorting out our paths & layout (if I get bulk loads dropped off now Neil will only whinge )
