I use them as both in the borders and as martyrs to various pests

They are lovely - quite big plants when they get going.

I've got half a dozen at the front of the plot, and half a dozen nasturiums.

I'm guessing that the soil is too rich for them so they are happy to grow loads of leaves at the expense of the flowers, but someone who knows what they are talking about might be along in a minute.

              Yeah, Hazel's on the money.
Too much leaf = too much nutrient. Starve them a bit ... they do fine on poor soil.

I had gigantic leaves on my nasturtiums last year that I had planted around the veg as a sacrifice. Then the light dawned that I had been feeding the nasturtiums when I fed the veg, so no flowers. The ones that I shoved in the poor dry soil down the side of the shed were abundant with flower!

                    Certainly is...

Can I just ask if you can use these marigolds the way you use bog standard calendula (ie, creams etc)

Hazel, your plot just looks great, and I'm glad the committee recognised that. The calendula looks great there.

Doc, yes, calenduala are always good.
It was the first thing I ever planted.
I was about 8 and a wise old man gave me 8 seeds.
                        I planted them in a little block - 4 x 2.
They all grew and flowered and I was so proud - and hooked for life.

When my Mother died in her eighties she still had the descendants of those marigolds - self sown seedlings - in little corners of her garden.
I wish I had kept some so I had them now.
