  • bergenia also know as Elephant Ears

hi all i would like to grow some of these i have a old lady that lives in a sheltered accommodation and they have gardens out side and there is one of these plants there.
what i would like to know is there anyway to take a cutting from it so i can grow my own plant.??
it does not have any flowers on it but i think thats because its been planted in the wrong place.
any help would be gratefully thanks

The best way to propagate a Bergenia is by division. In September onwards dig up the plant and divide the tuberous root system into three or four and then re-plant.

You can also propagate via leaf cuttings but the division is easier and more effective.

    Hope this helps.

I hate it too. It's a magnet for slugs and I don't think the flowers are good enough to make up to me for that failing!

Just cut off a bit of root with a leaf attached. Nobody would even notice it was missing.
