  • Bare root plants: roots bone dry?

    I bought some Physalis Chinese lantern plants as bare roots today on a whim. However on opening the packets back at home i found the bare roots completely bone dry, resembling little twigs (not much evidence of any roots...)

    Reading around the net, it says that bare root plants should be supplied with a moist packing medium. Should i even bother trying to plant these?

    Thanks

    If you're not planning on returning them , then stick them in and water well.
    Rhona's asparagus were like that- and they've survived.
    To be honest there are a lot of bone dry packs out there sold to an 'unaware' general public'- not good...best to check before you buy

      Where did you buy them from? Local Poundland? Seriously though, these should have been planted back in March or April - I don't think you'll get any growth from them now.

        I wasn't aware plants could actually come as 'bare roots' till i came across these today - will now know better in future to check for moisture.

        @Rusty

        Not quite, it was a 99p store! That said, i bought several rolls of weed control fabric, which does seem pretty decent.

          Maybe soak them well in a bucket of water for a while before you plant them and they might surprise you if you then keep them well watered when planted. Good luck.
