  • Agapanthus from seed

My agapanthus gave forth a fabulous show this year. I've now cut off all but a couple of the seed heads, of which I'm leaving to ripen so that I can have a go at growing from seed.

Has anyone grown these from collected seed? If yes, do they come true?

Named varieties may not grow true according to the RHS

But as I don't know what mine are, I thought I'd try anyway
I sowed seeds last autumn and now have 8 sturdy smallish plants to overwinter. I wonder how long they will take to flower ....

      Fab, thanks

I've just read that it could take 2 years to have a plant turn to flower. Happy to wait for that.

          Hello,

I'm trying this for the first time this year. I bought a pot of bulbs nearly in flower this year and they did do very well.

I have got 5 seed heads drying in paper bags. Yesterday I harvested enough seeds for 3 plant pots. I see from the link that they should be sowed in the spring. Oh well, I've sowed them now. It can be an experiment if I wait until spring to sow the others.

I don't really mind in they don't come true. I shall still be pleased if they germinate.

I sowed the seeds from mine in Autumn, and kept them in the greenhouse all winter. IIRC they germinated fairly quickly but stayed as small seedlings all Winter, and didn't start to bulk up until the warmer weather came along
            * Sow seed at 13-15°C (55-60°F) when ripe or in spring; keep the seedlings in a frame for the first winter in frost-prone climates.
