  • what soil for planting patio fruit trees in containers

I couldn't resist vc's suggestion of lucky dip 6 pack of patio fruit trees.

I have the tubs and stakes etc. now the question is what soil do I use as a potting medium?

what started off as an apparently simple choice got more and more complicated the more I read up on it, I am now confused.

the choices are now between topsoil cut with multipurpose compost and perlite, or just westland's compost with added john innes again with some added perlite.

    advice please

Straight John Innes no 3 would hold its structure and its nutrients longest. But your suggestions both look fine to me too. (And in my case at this time of year, "what's on special offer?" would be a factor. This is the nadir of the garden centre year).

I have all mine in john Innes No3 and just throw a handful of BFB on each in Feb/March and every one of them is thriving, we have enough apples etc to keep us going until at least the start of April. I refresh the soil about each 4/5yrs, and trim some big roots if that tree is too vigorous, just like big bonsai..
