If you buy long cane plants you will get some fruit this year.

Marshall's have Tulameen as a long cane:

            I expect others do too.

I think better to cut them down / remove fruit to encourage root growth, for benefit in future years, rather than to try to take a crop from them in First year.

Kristen, they are sold long specifically to generate a crop in the first year. No point in buying them long if they are to be cut short.

I personally wouldn't buy them long and I agree that stronger plants are best obtained by pruning after planting

Yup, I agree, should have made myself clearer - IMO no point buying "long canes" for a first-season harvest as I think it will be at the expense of the longer term establishment of the plant. I am sceptical, given the transplanting shock to the plant, that there would be much harvest in the first year anyway.

I've been considering taking out my Summer fruiting variety and replacing with Autumn fruiting canes. I left half my Autumn canes alone last feb and got a fab crop and the same again in Sept. Summer fruiting berries seem small in comparison. On top of that the Summer fruiting variety need a support system and mine has gone rotten in the ground. They need replacing.

Scarlett I put in Autumn Bliss (from Freecycle) around this time last year I got a good crop so after reading about not cutting down all the canes I'm giving that a go to get an earlier crop.

I cut half to the ground on each "clump"in feb last year. The berries were twice the size as the summer fruiting ones. Well worth a try.

I think Aldi were doing a 3 pack of long cane raspberries at the same time as they were selling their fruit trees (£3.99). Not sure what variety they were though.
