  • Strawberry plants

Just taken on an allotment after being on the list for 18 months so have got a great deal to learn.
Ive just received today some strawberry plants that I ordered from one of the Sunday papers
Is it still ok to plant them now or do I have to keep them under glass until the spring

Welcome to the vine and congratulations on getting your plot. Lots of fun and hard work ahead of you but all well worth it.

I think the strawberries will be fine if you plant them out now. I moved my strawbs in October last year and they settled in nicely over the winter. Ideally, the soil should be improved by adding well rotted manure before planting, but mulching with compost will help if this isn't possible. However, other more experience gardeners may have other advice.

Best of luck with your new plot.

I planted mine through weed surpressing fabric, it saves you having to straw them in the summer to protect the crop. Makes propagation easy to because you can see where the runners are and plant them accordingly. Will be fine over winter i think.

      many congratulations on the allotment.

I think strawberry plants need a vernalisation period of cold weather to help them fruit next year? They will benefit by being planted out now!

Autumn is great for planting fruit ... the soil is warmer than it is in spring, and the roots get away faster

trim of only the dead leaves and the runner each side if its rooted and off at the parent plant if you discarding, strawberries dont need covering.

I normally cut the runners off after the new plant has formed in the middle of august
Then replant and tidy my strawberry patch two weeks later.
