Right, after yet another year of fighting the slugs, snails, birds and mice I've admitted defeat. This is definitely the last summer I'm growing strawberries set out on the plot. I've just ordered 12 new plants (Royal Sovereign) and they're going in hanging baskets, but how many should I put in a 12 inch basket? It has to be a 12 inch one because the local GC are selling some lovely wrought iron ones at the moment, but I need to buy them quickly before they've all gone as they're in a sale (the plants themselves won't arrive until November). Also what shall I use as a liner? I'm thinking of the coir ones as the baskets will be planted up for more than one season and I've an idea that these will last longer.

i put 3 in mine but that's only cos i had 3 plants and one basket so i didn't have much choice

I was thinking three would be about right, I've bought 4 baskets now and they didn't have many left so it's a little late to change my mind. What about compost? I usually use a peat-free multi-purpose, but John Innes no2 if it's for something a little longer term.
