  • Redcurrant cutting

    Hi,

I have just planted out some redcurrant bushes and when I did a piece broke off, can I use this for a cutting and if so, should I cut off the brown section and plant the green section or plant as it is.

    Thanks

It should form a bush, assuming it gets going, only say this as not all do.
Not sure about removing the lower brown bit, if it is a bit too woody and there is enough green then cut as the green should form roots a bit easier.

Just did the same with a blackcurrant and planted it in a big pot of compost I had. However they should do well in reasonable ground. I think the "normal" method was to cut a suitable bit off and lay in a trench then cover with soil and see what made it and what didn't.

Depends on how big/thick the green part is.
I use pieces about a foot long, take off the bottom leaves and poke it in the soil to about half its length.
Then put the pot in a corner and forget about it...............

If it's anything like blackcurrants it'll be more of a case of 'how do I stop it rooting?'
