Default Really silly apple question!

But when will I know if they're ready?

I have an apple tree of unknown type in the garden which always produces lots of apples. Last year I waited till they dropped and then used them in cooking.

This year the children have been picking! They're fairly big ones, but I don't think they're cooking apples as they didn't seem to get that huge last year.

Trouble is how can I tell if I can cook with them or if they're under grown if you know what I mean! Really want to make some apple pie

I was told that if you hold the apple in the palm of your hand and give it a quarter twist quite quickly and it comes away then it is ready - I hope they are for your sake as you seem pretty keen, as would I be

Cut a slice out & try it Rachel you'll soon know if it's a cooker or not ! If it's sweet don't put so much sugar in & make a pie as a trial. If your worried about eating it I'll pm my address

Thanks! They came away really easily, a couple dropped off as I was cutting off a few branches.

I'll try it as I make the pie Thanks for the taster offer though
