  • Rasperry bush randomly dying

Hello. I have 20 odd raspberry canes in my fruit cage. I planted them two years ago and all has been good, until last week when i noticed my largest cane had suddenly died in the space of a week. The ones next to it are now going the same way, but all the others are fine. The leaves turned brown and it just sort of shrivelled up!

I have mulched them in the spring, being careful not to cover the stems, with grass from my plot that i has never had weed killer etc put on it, done what i've done the last two years. No sign of diesease as far as i can tell on any plants!

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I have a mix of autumn and summer fruiting bushes and i think its the autumn ones that have died.

    Any help appreciated

Are these autumn fruiting canes which have grown this year? Or last year's?

Hi wendy. They are canes that have grown from last year largely. However this years growth has also died.

Any brown marks on the stems before/during the die back???
Also/or - there may be fungal spores on the roots???

I have lost many summer fruiting canes this way over the years. I'd take a punt that it's raspberry root rot.
            See link below:-

Most available varieties aren't resistant to this and once it gets into a patch of soil newly planted canes often go the same way.

Hey, no browning on the stems and no spores. I pulled out the plant and there was next to no root on it despite the bush being large, so maybe it was root rot. Took it far away and disposed of it! Thanks all for your help
