    Pears in north east scotland.

    Good morning all...I do fancy trying to grow a pear tree but how realistic is it in the north east of Scotland? I've looked into it and concord looks to be the the tree to go for.

    But before jumping in id like to see if anyone has hands on experience of growing pears up here (aberdeen)

    Concord seems to be fine for Scotland but personally I am not sure it is a particularly strong variety. Are there no orchard groups, walled gardens or anything near you worthy of a day out? You could try e-mailing beechgrove to see what fruit varieties they have as many of them are well established.       All I can add is that If growing only one pear tree it would need to be a self pollinating variety.

        I can't give much advice apart from don't grow a conference pear. We have one ( that will be coming down soon). Doesn't produce much fruit and what it does produce never ripens.

        Just so you know I'm not (always) a muppet. I didn't plant a conference pear

          Thanks norfolkgrey, I have been to this Cardenas centre it's great it's a good hours drive from me but we'll worth the journey I could spend all day there and spend a small fortune,

          I will get in touch see what they say

            Guess we have all made mistakes, my first apple tree was orange pippin, and that was recommended by garden center staff won't be buying anything from there ever again.

                A quick check of a few sites and Orange Pippin give the pear Invincible as a good option.

                Looked through the pears but although OP have suggested UK areas they do not list the pears by this area, so unable to select growing areas of UK 1 or UK 2 as options. The National Fruit collection do similar, lots of pears but I cannot filter on growing area.

                Not sure where you would get Invincible however.

                  I'd like to know as well as I'll be taking over a new garden soon. Pitmedden Gardens near Ellon grow pear trees but they do have a walled garden. it woudl be interesting to find out what varieties they grow

                    Red falstaff

                    Good evening all... Has anyone on here living in aberdeen area tried growing red falstaff.
                    If so how did it go?

                      The big problem on the East side of Scotland is it's prone to fruit trees getting diseases like scab, my apple trees are blighted, what ever you buy check it's disease resistant to save problems later.

                        Thanks for the heads up, I haven't dared to buy a pear tree (due to been in scotland) I have some apple trees. What trees are you growing?

                          I have a Williams, concord and conference, and this year they are all in full flower, so hopefully I might get my first fruit, I will let you know as and when we see if we are to have a summer and if we get to taste any fruit..
