Old Tyres for a Strawberry Tower?

I have been thinking about building a tower out of old tyres for my Strawberries - think I saw it on Gardeners World years ago - but a neighbour says 'You dont wana be doing that!'

He says tyres are so toxic it will be like serving cancer to my family with whipped cream.

Obviously - I'm not keen to do that and I appreciate that tyres are not exacty 'nice' but it seems a shame to see so many dumped about the countryside - I thought I might give it a go?

I would really appreciate your opinions??
