Default No strawberries.

I bought some perputal variety strawberries last autumn and planted them. About 20 plants. They grew and have a reasonable amount of foliage. Two plants produced between them about 5 strawberries and the rest none at all. All however are great at producing runners which i cut off in the early stage. I know strawberries produce most fruit in the second year and mine are only of course in their first year. Surely though I'm doing something wrong and there be be at least a moderate crop in the first year???
