  • Newbie. Beginner Gardner. Lots of questions. Lots to learn.

    Helllloooo

You may recognise me as a newbie as I only registered to your site I just hit a quiet spell in work and thought I'd check out the forum with my lunchtime cuppa in hand.

I thought I would start a new thread about my back yard which was given a new lease of life last spring. I like each part of our house to serve it's purpose so once we got it working for us properly I started working on the back yard to give it more of a purpose. Basically it's fairly small and it's concrete so container growing is the only way for me. There is also a possibility of moving house in a few years time so containers can be easier brought with us

The front is being revamped this year. The hedge is being replaced with a fence, the stones and path are being replaced with brick, a low level flower bed will be built round the perimeter of the fence for lots of lovely geraniums, lavender, shrubs as well as spring bulbs to hopefully pop up flowers all year round.

I have a craft shed in one corner of our yard and another shed where our cute wee dog sleeps in the other corner so space is minimal. In between the sheds is the path to the back gate. Each side of the path against the gavel of each shed I have pots galore of mainly fruit. I do however grow some veg too. I've strawberries planted in hanging baskets. I've basically ran out of window ledge space as well as space for hanging baskets, now I'm rapidly running out of ground space for pots, so it's looking like the strawberries I want to get this year will need to be planted in wall planters.

    I have:
    - 2 plum (black amber)
    - 5 blackcurrant
    - 4 gooseberry
    - 3 redcurrant
    - 1 blackberry
    - 27 raspberry
    - 6 blueberry
    - 60 strawberry (unsure how many will need replaced but have my eye on 70 more)

I also grow herbs, radish, salad leaves, carrots, tomatoes, chillies, peppers, spring onion. This year I would like to try parsnips, onion, beetroot, cauliflower, turnip, and peas if possible.

I may have some seeds to swap but I will put that in that section of the forum when I sort them out.

I'm only a beginner with SO MUCH to learn and am hoping you will all be able to help me. Any hints and tips are well appreciated.

    Thanks for reading
