  • Never grown fruit before

Hi other than strawberries in bags, I haven't grown any fruit before. I really fancy growing blueberries, raspberries and black currents but are they suitable to grow in pots? Or a raised planter? Also what varieties are best and how many should I plant together? Thankyou in advance for any advice 😀

I have grown Blueberries in pots but had to get 2 varieties to pollinate. The only other thing is they have to be grown in ericaceous compost as they prefer acidic conditions.

As far as I'm aware you can put raspberries in large pots but they won't do nearly as well as those planted in the ground. I don't see why you couldn't grow them in deep raised beds though, as I believe they're fairly shallow-rooted. But I might be completely wrong there!

I grow blueberries in pots and they do well. As Bigmally suggests use ericaceous compost and I tend to water with rain water. Once they start to fruit don't forget to net them because the birds love them.

As for raspberries and black currants I don't see why they wouldn't be successful although I haven't grown then in pots. I would use a soil based compost though and for all I'd stick with one plant per pot.

A fairly new black currant (for me anyway) that I grow is Ebony and it does really well. For this season I have just bought one called Big Ben, but I can't comment on that yet but the reviews seemed quite good.

Whatever you choose to grow, good luck with it, I'm sure it will be a success

Raspberries aren't idea in pots because they throw up runners, but you could start with a cane and see how you go. I would grow autumn ones because they are shorter than summer ones and after picking fruit leave for the winter and cut down old cane in Feb.

I've grown redcurrants in pots with no problems.

Yeah, of course you can grow them in pots I have 5 varieties of blueberry (7 bushes), raspberries, blackcurrants, jostaberry, dwarf pomegranate, apple, cherry, medlar, persimmon, strawberries, barberry, fig, checkerberry, elder, blue sausage fruit .... and yes, they're all in containers Just make sure the pot is big enough, and it's got the right stuff in it
