Grow Your Own Magazine

As it's my first visit to a very informative site, I have plucked up courage to ask my first question!
We have quite a large Grape vine that is 5 years old and has produced fruit in previous years,(green grapes, very bitter unknown type, very good for wine making) this year some of the bunches started to grow quite well then started to turn black and shrivel,we have lost all the crop.
Is it a terminal disease?

Not sure exactly what your problem might be but if you search for the thread Grape vine by Linda_darnel_shaw you will see that the last post has a link to a site in America where you might find out what is causing your problem.

Good luck with your vine - I'm sure some clever grape will be able to give you a more comprehensive answer soon.

hi G.N. welcome to Grapevine (a lively fun site, gets compulsive.... - but brill info, you won't be a garden novice for long!) And you actually grow a grapevine, double qualification.

Your problem sounds like "black rot" - you need to check that it is so Google something like "grape vine disease black rot" and you'll locate pictures and descriptions whereby you can check. If it is I don't think it's necessarily terminal for the plant if you're rigorous in pruning, removing and burning diseased vine and fallen fruits etc but you'll probably have to spray if there's any recurrence next year. But at least you'll know what you're looking for and can take early action. It's most likely in warm wet conditions which certainly fits this strange summer...
