  • Moving strawberries and woodchip

    Hi,
Was just wondering if I could move my strawberries now. Have got two lots some are in pots and some are in the ground at the allotment.
Have got a new area for them all to go in. Was thinking of possibly putting wood chip around them to help keep the slugs off them. A good idea or just stick to straw?

Hi there, just spotted your post, I grow my strawberries in raised beds and often at this time of year find that the only way I can get the weeds and grass out is to dig the plants up, pull the couch grass out of them then stick them back in the now weed free ground. Don't know whether I should do this but the strawberries seem to thrive on it, I pick more than my family can eat or turn into jam every season. If it were me I'd just do it and keep my fingers crossed!

They should be fine to move now (i.e. before any signs of growth starting for the new season). I try to disturb the root-soil volume as little as possible when transplanting - in other words transfer as much of it intact as possible. This obviously helps to maintain the established close contact between root and soil, hence reduces likelihood of any water stress (not that this is likely this spring ).

I've never used wood chips round strawberries, but I have used barley straw after flowering. I don't see much point in putting them down yet.
