  • Moving black currants

I have several plants I grew from cuttings last year and I want to move them. There seems to be alot of advice that says autumn or early spring would it not be better when they are totally dormant?

Depends on who you listen to but for me you won't go far wrong if you transplant when dormant.

I gave 4 of my blackcurrants a good soak the other week and lifted them the next day to their new spot and as we have been getting cooler weather here they haven't dropped a leaf, given a chance plants want to grow, so well watered ones transfer reasonably easily, just give them good soil to grow into and they are away, they may sometimes sulk for a week or two but I have never had one die on me when moving them "in leaf" and some don't seem to realise they have been moved as seems to be the case with my front garden blackcurrants.....

I am moving two redcurrants and will waittill they are dormant and will give them a good prune at the same time. I have also moved currants in the green and as long as you get the rootball out fairly intact and keep it well watered there should not be an issue.
