  • Meikers cherry (lidl)

Popped into Lidl this morning to see what dwarf trees they had on special offer (was particularly interested in a Stella that they had a photo of on the website). Turns out the only cherry available in my local Lidl in Cardiff was a "Meikers". Anyone know anything about this variety? Googling turned a "Dubbele Meikers" and "Meikers" one is sweet the other not

Hiya from another bit of beautiful Kairdiff
I saw those in the Caerphilly store this morning and wondered what they were. Couldn't reach the tree as it was in the middle of a box of them. if I had to guess I'd say Sweet.

Hi veggiechicken, popped down to another lidl at lunchtime and had a closer look and the Latin on name tag gives it away Prunus cerasus looks like it's a sour cherry. Fine by me but some people might be in for shock if they expect a sweet one

Was rather surprised to see they had Jonagold apples there, hope potential buyers have got apple trees in nearby gardens with that one!

I have one of the miekers , its a real tangy sharp cherry, bit smaller than the other types of cherry I grow, almost perfectly round fruit, the branch wood looks a lot paler than the other varieties too and a different grow habit, I have about 10 varieties of cherry and this ones is a bit different in all respects to the others , the fruit is almost perfect looking artificial cherry, I think if snow white was offered a cherry instead of an apple this would be it

Thanks Swaine, picked-up a tree yesterday evening. Now just need to get my hand on a dwarf sweet cherry.
