  • Mara Des Bois Strawberries

    Hi Guys,

I keep reading how great these strawberries are but wondered if anyone had experience of growing them.

I've been looking round my local garden centres and can't see any (maybe a little early in the growing season) and I'm always reluctant to order plants online as I like to see them first and check size and health etc before purchasing and hate paying a fortune in p&p.

If they are as unmissable as I've been lead to believe I may bite the bullet and order some online if I cant find any locally in the next few weeks.

    Any advice would be great.

    Thanks

Don't be afraid of ordering strawberry plants on line, I was sceptical until I did it with Marshmellow (bare-rooted via Amazon of all places).

They did look a bit muddy and sorry for themselves when they arrived, but gave them a quick soak and potted them up in some John Innes No 2. They seem to be doing fine on a windowsill in an unheated room, I'll probably plant them outside in the next few weeks.

I'm growing these and they are great, large fruit with fantastic flavour. I got them as bare root plants from Suttons. The plants were good quality but they were slow to dispatch.

I got an email from DT Brown about a free p&p weekend so I've ordered some from them the price doesn't seem so bad without the p&p which was almost as much as the plants!

I've bitten the bullet and ordered 5 plants.

Thank for all the advice guys hopefully they will be as good as they're meant to be

Very popular here in France and crop through the summer into the Autumn. Highly recommended.

Hi! I have grown Maras for years and they are great. I grubbed out my June bearers in preference to these. As they are perpetual you get little and often rather than one big glut and then nothing. The flavor is marvelous but you do need to let them ripen completely. This is one fruit I almost never share-they are too good. They start a bit later than the June bearing but I have harvested until October in good years, so that is a nice bonus. Just make sure you cover them, as the blackbirds like them almost as much as I do!

Bought some of these as well as some Malwina from DT Brown last autumn. For some reason the Mara could not be delivered till March [still awaiting them] whereas the Malwina came straight away. The Malwina were good plants and have bedded in nicely. So optimistic about the Mara plants.

I've been put off Malwina due to this thread:

                            snow!

My Mara De Bois strawberries have just been delivered and I have 5" of snow out there and it is still falling. Typical, I better put them in someting damp to keep the roots wet.

Mine are due any day as I've had an email saying they've been dispatched and I'm in the same position Invicta with the snow. I've got some seed compost and pots in the house so I can pot them up for a little while if needs be.

The prices I saw were pretty much the same everywhere I got them cheaper as the company had a free p&p weekend which took a fair bit off the price. If you don't desperately need them now might be worth seeing if you get any emails with a similar offer.
