  • Looking for damsons

    Hi,
Don't know if I've put this in the right place.
Was wondering how peoples damsons are doing. I have access to a yellow damsons tree but it has very little fruit.
I was wondering how other peoples trees were doing. My mom is looking for fruit for jamming and can't find any even in the hedge rows. Have even looked on line for pick your own but can't seem to find any local ones.
Are you having a good year?
And what can I do to help next doors damson tree? It is in a secluded area with old grass clipping and bits of compost round it. Don't think next doors would be bothered what I did to the tree.

I'm probably wasting my time answering because I live nowhere near bit bit I will anyway. My Damson trees are too young to produce fruit but the ones growing wild on my father's farm are weighed down with them. They aren't ripe yet but they're getting there. I'll get enough damsons off one tree to keep me in jam for the year.

Haven't checked the damsons yet as they don't tend to turn purple until September and you can never see them. I was tipped off about some cherry plums recently and have picked absolutely loads- some yellow some deep red, some in between. A tree near where I live by the roadside is covered in what looks like cherry plums but haven't picked any yet. It's weird I've often wondered what it was as I always drive past it but never spotted any fruit on it before.

jam, just jam? what about a lovely damson pie with lashings of custard or maybe ice cream, or cook it down to a puree to add when making more ice cream...must go now as drooling onto laptop is frowned on by OH.....

I know. I quite like damson pie with thick custard not this this dish water type stuff. Don't know about puree though. Prefer a nice pie or crumble.

I have never seen Damsons like this year. Apparently the trees tend to have a three year cycle (lean, OK, bumper crop) so it might be that mine are fortunate to be having their bumper year when the weather has been so fine.

My few established but scraggy damson tree hedge on the plot have yielded about 60 kilos of good fruit (another 30+ on the compost heap.

Mine are just coming to an end now. All being frozen ready for wine, jam and chutney etc later.

            Dean.
