  • Kiwi Jenny

    Morning Grapes.

Here is a photo of flowers on my three year old kiwi, which should be self-fertile Jenny. This year is the first year of flowers, but no fruit has set despite lots of bees.

Hunting around on the interweb suggests that this is probably not Jenny and the lack of fruit means probably not self fertile either. Drat.

So can anyone tell me if this is male or female (I think female, but am no biologist!!)? And if it is female and I buy another self-fertile would that pollinate this one as well as itself? (And do I really want two kiwis ...)

    Thanks
    PP

The Kiwi 'Jenny' I have growing is a bit hairy and the leaves are a rounder shape, the young shoots are tinged red. Not to say I've got the real deal either! I cut it back and moved it last year so no flowers this year, and although it has flowered previous years I've never had any fruit set. I've a Kiwi Isaiah and that has narrower leaves with much less 'furryness'.

These are Isaiah, narrower leaves which are smooth to the touch, Jenny's are a bit rough.

Your flowers have prominent stamens providing pollen so I'd say male flowers.
