  • How often to water strawberry plants?

I've just got myself two strawberry plants from Homebase. They are about 7 or 8 inches tall, and look fairly healthy.

I'm going to put them in my mini greenhouse until they are ready to go in my containers.

How often should I be watering them?

Do you think they are ready to go straight into the wall containers now?

Water them when they are dry and you can plant them into your outside containers now as strawberries are very hardy.

I'd plant them out now into your containers. As Eco-chic says, strawbs are very hardy. As regards watering, keep the soil / compost damp and they will love you, but they are quick to revive themselves if you let them get a bit too dry.

Don't whatever you do, over feed then. I did that last year and got lush foliage but no fruit!

I have them in big pots and give them a good soak once a week (feed when the flowers start, every fortnight) and if the sun is out I water them.

Following on from what Rogersse said:

The first watering I give them has Nitrogen to get some leaves going, and from then on I alternate with water & water/tomato feed. I got a good crop last year from my 2 year old plants until the rain started!!

It's been raining pretty heavily here in the west midlands over the last few days and i've only just planted some strawberrys plants in a strawberry basket, i'd hope that cause they are in a basket that excess water will run out- but i am concerned about the soil becoming water logged and affecting my plants.

Will they be ok in heavy rain or should i do something to stop the strawberry basket becoming water logged?

They dont like being water logged, it can lead to rotting

So should i put plastic covering on it when it rains heavily so it doesn't get too watered?

No, it won't be necessary. Water can easily escape baskets and wind has a drying effect too.

I've put my two strawberry plants on the side of my shed:

Is there enough room here for them to grow?

I've been lightly watering them once a day. Should I do it twice a day?
