  • How do I fit it all in?

As the weather is so awful, I have been planning my fruit bed which I hope to put in this autumn. I had planned on a 3x6 meter cage. Reading up I find that it will only just be big enough for 2 rows of 4 raspberry canes 3 blueberries in pots and my 6 chiliean guava berry plants. I can't Semmelweis to make room for the gooseberries and strawberries, not to mention black currants and a blackberry. Am I trying to fit a quart into a pint pot ? Any advice gratefully received

sorry about the quality of the pic

I would start off by just putting 1 row of 8 Raspberry canes...................what is Semmelweis?

Can you not put them down the 6m side?..............If you are really struggling for space, I would put 8 canes in 3m.

Mine are about 1ft apart, so that would be 10 plants in 3 metres:

I've just seen your pic. They look fantastic. How far apart are the rows? How many canes did you plant.
( I want your raspberry bed)

The rows are about 3ft apart & each row has around 10 plants so approx 50 plants altogether.

Bloody Nora Mally, you must have a LOT of raspberries every year LOL

I bought one little root stock when I first moved in ten year ago, and that has spread to become probably 7 productive canes this year and that produces more than what me and my daughter can eat fresh (and make a few jars of jam). What do you do with it all?

And I'm a bit jealous of it too!

Interesting thread, I have two 6ft 1.8m x 1.8m greenhouse frames that I want to turn into fruit cages and was wondering how best to arrange them, but going on what BM is saying I would only get 3 possibly 4 plants down each side if the greenhouse and along the back if I put raspberries in one greenhouse.

I'm going to have Strawberries in a greenhouse netted frame like the photo below in the other one. I'm thinking of putting them in the shape of an E on plan with the middle horizontal leg shorter say 1m so I can get inside via the door to water and pick them.

Fruit needs more space than you think. I've got about 5 or 6' between my currants and gooseberries and now they're mature I wouldn't have wanted them any closer.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

What about the option of protecting 'some' of the raspberries in the cage and taking a chance or throwing a loose net over some more in a different location. this might give you an option of more most years but now and again only the protected canes produce. Since the canes can be got for nothing by splitting it makes some sense.
