  • How can you tell the difference between raspberry and blackberry canes?

I bought one of the berry packs from Lidl a few weeks ago, I think it was £2.49 for 3 (but I got 6 in mine) canes, Gooseberry Careless , Raspberry Glen Ample and Blackberry (doesn't say what type they are).

There is one with thorns which I assume is the gooseberry, and 5 others but they all have the same leaves and same stems by the look of it.

Does this mean I have either 5 blackberry canes, 5 raspberry canes or do they just look the same until they start to fruit?

I think I may have sussed it.

I have just found the packaging which said you will receive 1 gooseberry, 1 blackberry and 3 raspberry canes.

I can see which is the gooseberry as it has thorns and the leaves are quite different from the others.

Three of the other 5 (as they put one too many in there) are a lot bushier and are starting to grow extra shoots from the bottom of the compost. The other one hasn't grown as much as the others so I think I will assume this is the blackberry cane.

Do raspberries grow quicker than blackberries?

I've got both this year, pictures attached.

1st Pic (2 plants one big pot) is blackberry on the left and raspberry on the right.
These were both canes, from wilko and poundland respectively.
Neither have done anything up top but have both sprouted (on the same day) from the bottom.
I got another rasp from poundland at the same time and it's only sprouting from the bottom as well.

2nd Pic - Raspberry. bought as a cane from lidl with 5 others, has only sprouted from the top, but oh how it's sprouted. currently my most impressive.

3rd Pic - Blackberry - bought from QD, looked weedy then, looks weedy now, doesn't look like it needs repotting, so i don't really know what's wrong with it.

      While i'm here, i've got some questions ;

Blackberries and raspberries provide fruit from the brown canes, does this mean anything that grows off the brown cane bit (like in pic 2), even if it's all fresh that year ?

Do i leave all the green growth that's come up from the ground (as in pic 1 ) until next year for the fruit or do i cut it down in the autumn as well ?

        This is just a boast

This raspberry was bought as a 4 foot stick 4 weeks ago! Yes; they can grow pretty damn sharpish when they want to!
