Hello, All. Does anyone know how Hessayon's New Fruit Expert book differs from the earlier version, The Fruit Ecpert? The latter is widely available, the other scarcer than hen's teeth and am curious as to whether the new book is radically different. Thanks.

Still got my 1990 edition
The "New" one is at silly prices on Amazon.

Yes, but then Pomona's £7+ delivery charge gets it up to silly money level again. Just trying to figure out what the new edition contains as the old one is available everywhere for less than £1 in many cases....Comment

I am simply asking if anyone is familiar with the old edition and can compare it to the new. Obviously £200 is absurd. I know how to use the internet - it is specifically a comparison of the two Hessayon books I'm after.Comment

Thanks for the replies. The cover of the new book has a sticker claiming 'Includes 70 New Varieties'. I am growing loquat and wineberries which may fall into the 'new variety' category so I'm curious. My local library has a copy of the new Fruit Expert which I will borrow. Meanwhile I've ordered the old one for £2 and will do a comparison when it arrives.Comment

Best of luck with the loquat. A Bob Flowerdew book I've got says it will only fruit under glass here. Mine has started flowering after many many years but no fruit. We are 300ft up here. BUT someone from Barons Court area brought me carriers full of fruit from one there. They didn't know they were edible until they'd seen some I'd bought!Riddlesdown (S Croydon)Comment

That's interesting about the Baron's Court harvest. This is the first summer when I've spotted a number of London loquats fruiting heavily. I am not growing my tree for fruit, however - just as a small feature tree. Our locall Turkish grocer sells the fruit and my tree was grown from pit.Comment

Popping back to report that one obvious difference between the old and new Hessayon books: the updated version includes a section on growing fruit in containers which doesn't exist at all in the earlier version. And, as the cover proclaims, the revised version includes 70 new varieties.Comment

Well, if I had an order in to Pomona Fruits and had to pay the £7.95 delivery charge anyway, I would buy the New Fruit Expert for £8.99. It seems unavailable from any other source, barring the extraordinary £399 copy from amazon. (But there the delivery charge is only £2.79!) Still haven't worked out which are the new 70 varieties - and even though I've spotted fruiting loquat treees in London this year, . 'loquat' is still listed in a separate section, called 'Fruit for All Seasons,' retitled from 'Shop Bought Fruit' in the earlier version.Comment
