Growing strawberries under raspberries

Trouble is raspberry canes are wanderers. Next year's canes will come up either side of this year's. That means in the middle of your strawberries. You could pull them out as they appear but you will be reducing next year's raspberry canes and continually disturbing your strawberries. Not an ideal place but if you've no choice, that's what it will have to be.

I had the same thought, but I could see it all getting a bit messy with both sending out runners. Instead I used a hole saw for a drill and turned an old black bin into a strawberry tower. They all went in that and seem to be flying along now.

I tried to grow my strawberries under raspberries as thought it would work well all in the fruit cage. However did have exactly the problem that Wendy C describes with raspberry canes popping up everywhere. That's not to mention the slugs and the little piles of half chewed strawberries hidden under the raspberry canes curtesy of the mice! Give it a go and save the runners next year and plant them somewhere else if you need to/can.

Do you have room for pots? I grow most of my strawberries in pots/troughs so I can move them into the sun in summer and shove them out of the way when they've finished fruiting.

I used to grow mine in pots but find I get two or three times the crop in the ground - this could have more to do with my erratic watering though

I had my strawbs in a two tier planter last year, and was producing twice the amount per plant as my neighbour two doors down who planted hers in the ground. I believe we both bought the same plants, but I paid more attention to mine. With appropriate care there is no reason that plants in pots should produce less than plants in the ground - they might take more work, but can produce just as well

Last year I had chamomile beneath my raspberries, but I do have a couple of spare strawbs I haven't found space for yet. Maybe I'll underplant something with them

Not only will next year's new canes & runners be all tangled up together, your strawbs will be in the shade, which is no good at all

Cheers, As I said you can get nearly 30 plants in them. Word of advice though , when filling the bin allow the compost to settle before laying each layer of plants in or they'll be sucked inside the bin by the pressure of wet compost above them. Also lots of pebbles or crocks in the bottom, and chuck a bag of vermiculite into the mix to hold the nutrients and water.
