  • Gooseberries

Good morning to everyone. I hope you can help a newbie out as nobody else can (it would appear).

I have a gooseberry bush which was only planted earler this year. It already has loads of fruit but most of the gooseberries have this 'blush' on them which seems to be made up of little red dots. Some of them also have this small circular spot that looks like something has eaten into it.

I don't know if it is of any significance but two apple trees I planted nearby have what looks like mould on them. On the apples themselves I mean. The guy at the local garden centre thought the red could be mildew but wasn't sure to be honest.

    Can anyone help?

Hi Fireblade. Welcome to the Vine. Could you add your location to your profile please? It will then show up on your posts and helps when giving advice. Do you have any pictures of the problem gooseberries?

Found this link for you on growing and caring for gooseberries. Gooseberries / RHS Gardening Don't think your problem is mildew - that is white.

We had a thread about the red dots thing recently and it seems it's a sign that they're ripening - only happens with certain strains. I know ours often have these little red dots on them. Not sure about the spot though. Cut one open and see if there's anything inside. Ours have had mildew (still got loads though), it's like a brown fur which rubs off if you get it quick enough - at least I think it's mildew

Hmmmph, I posted to this thread and it's gawn somewhere . Never mind. My red uns are mottled to start with but then go on to develop the proper colour. variety Pax. don't get too hung up about colouration. They eat just the same
