Hi we have a james greave apple tree that is about 9 years old, it has done very little since we bought it but now after cutting it back to 18 inches high 3 months ago it has sent up a healthy looking branch about 4 foot high and another smaller one on the other side just 9 inches long, do I dig up the whole tree , or wait to see if it will reward us with an apple, I have photos but its very confusing trying to get them on this page

OK so its a raspberry, I know its a raspberry even the apple tree knows its a raspberry, but when I tried to add pics it would only show 4 pics of my last listing and no provision to delete them and add a photo of the apple tree..so if anyone can tell me how to post a pic of the apple tree I will do that in the morning , its bedtime now for us over 80sComment

Your earlier photos shouldn't stop you posting more.

Thank you, I just tried again to post photos but get the same problem, just have to keep trying thank you alan...............just had another go,,,see photo, don't know what the photos are until I see them just trying not to confuse the apple treeComment

I would take it out as I can't see a graft line so it is likely to be the rootstock and have read others saying they have grown them out of curiosity and the apples were just naff.Comment

Well, you now have the equivalent of a one-year maiden.
Do you know what rootstock the tree was grafted onto?
My suspicion is that after a couple of years it'll probably do the same again and stop growing. I find that if a tree hasn't put on decent growth within two or three years of planting, it's probably only ever going to be small and slow-growing - and possibly not very productive.
My experience is that if previous apple-growing hasn't gone well and you want to make up for lost time with lots of apples relatively quickly, buy a tree grafted onto the very vigorous M25 rootstock, make sure it's a variety known for heavy cropping early in its life, and avoid pruning if at all possible.
Someone I know planted a modern heavy-cropping, moderate vigour variety (forgot the name) on M25 rootstock and left it mostly unpruned. It's now several years old, about 10ft high, 8ft wide, and for the last few years has been producing two or three wheelbarrows full of fruit each year. Unfortunately they've decided they don't like the fruit..Comment
