I am thinking about planting a fig tree up a south facing wall on my house. What would your advice be?
    Thanks

Hello Moll and welcome to the Grapevine.
If you could put your location on your profile it would help with advice - especially with plants like figs that like the warmth
I grow figs in South Wales - this thread may give you some ideas http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...fig_67676.html

The most common is Brown Turkey, although there are newer varieties available now so look through a supplier - looking at Ken Muir they have 3 varieties available.

You need to restrict their root growth, so they get planted in a container in the ground, I have no idea how big the container needs to be.

So it is sunny, sheltered site with the tree in a container to restrict root growth.

After that you need to read up on which of the"new" figs you have to keep for next year and which can (have to ??) be removed. I do not know what happens if you leave all figs on for the following year, but I would guess too many and the crop is small figs. There are tales of people removing the wrong ones and so no crop.

So location is relevant for the sunny and sheltered location.

we had our first figs of the year today, brown turkey, and they were lovely, the plant is in a large pot against a southfacing wall and the sun we have had this year has made all the difference, still quite a few to come yet...but now the weather has gone cold.. d*** it

Pick a good variety I would recommend Desert king. Although getting that variety is hard in the uk.

Our figs are no longer in containers and removing that constriction has resulted in much much more fruit. Yes it has grown some but they respond well to pruning. A south facing wall will do very well thank you.

I thought they were supposed to like to be restricted?!?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
