Default Ever heard of a Kiwiño (aka Hardy Kiwi)?

On a recent trip to the north of Spain I was amazed to see in the local supermarket an array of small fruit trees and bushes for sale alongside the normal suprmarket stock. Apart from being sold at silly prices (£3 each) they had some interesting plants I'd never seen before; One of these was a Kiwiño, described as produing small red hairless kiwi type fruit.

It's not self fertile and was thus being sold in a pack of 2 female plants and 1 male plant for £7. Anyway given the price and its novelty factor I decided to bring one back with me to give it a go.

However I've not been able to find out too much about it on the web other than the fact that its also known in English as the Tara Vine or Hardy Kiwi (see bottom of http://www.primalseeds.org/OTHERSTUF...rootcrops.htm).

I was wondering if anyone else has any tried growing this plant outdoors in the UK. Did it produce much fruit? Any growing tips?

Cheers

Bogbunny

Default Kiwiño

Hi there

As you say the Kiwiño is a small hairless kiwi - a hybrid of kiwi, plum and pineapple originally from Korea. It's been introduced in Europe by an agricultural company fron Northen Spain only in the last few years. There seem to be a lot of Spanish and German articles on the internet about the introduction of this new fruit, but nothing on how to actually grow it. I would try growing it the same way as a normal kiwi...

Where abouts in Northern Spain did you go? I originally come from Portonovo, in the Rias Baixas (Lower Estuaries)
