  • Do Strawberry Cross Pollinate?

Certain discussions in few posts seem to imply that it can happen. I will be growing more than one variety but wondered if I need to take extra precautions to keep my strawberry true to type.

I can understand it's the seeds from the fruit that would cross pollinate but runners ? Surely not, unless they are referring to self-seeding from fallen fruits on the ground.

99.9% sure cross pollination does not affect resulting fruit from parent plant/runners,(except for possibly higher yeild which can be associated with growing more than 1 veriety of the same fruit) have also heard growing more than 1 veriety improves shape of resulting fruit, this could again the cross pollination thing,
but as you say any seedlings grown may possibly be hybrids,

BUT, on saying that i was once stopped in a garden centre when buying a bunch of raspberry canes, as was told to keep them away from other raspberries as they will cross pollinate?, but im sure nothing affects fruit of parent plant,

Cross pollination will probably occur, but it will not affect your crops in any way. The only problem (or advantage) would be if you then intended to propagate your plants from seed. Cross pollination will not affect plants from runners, offsets, or divisions.

And as 99.9% of strawberries are propogated from runners or by division its not an issue. I grow Marshmello and Aromel in close proximity and have not noticed any issues.

However, some varieties are grown from seed and they must be grown in isolation to prevent any cross pollinating unless proved to be self fertile.
