Found this fella on an apple a few weeks ago. Could someone tell me what it is please and whether any preventative steps are necessary?

Google says its a Scalloped Hazel caterpillar.

Thanks very much, Bren. Yes that looks about right. And given some of the other species of plants listed that it's often found on eg. Birch, Hawthorn, Fir.. these are all present in the local area of my apple tree too so ideal environment for it I guess. GreatGoogle says its a Scalloped Hazel caterpillar.
