  • Coldstore strawberry plants problems

I bought some coldstore strawberry plants a couple of weeks ago. I planted them out in a sunny position with no shade and watered well. I used slug pellets and they were covered with netting as there are a lot of pests at the allotment. There was a lot of rain for a few days so I next checked them 6 days later and as far as I can tell they've either died or disappeared. I'm blind and couldn't feel them anywhere. The person with me said they could see one dead one. It could be they were all dead and she didn't look enough for the others (there were 11 in total).

I've only grown strawberries from runners before which I planted in a container on my patio and they did well. I'm new to this and not sure what went wrong with these coldstore strawberries. Any ideas?

I'm actually a bit confused about the different types of strawberry plants which can be bought - runners, misted tips, coldstored, bear rooted. These coldstore ones had very long roots which surprised me as I've often seen reference to sellers saying they trim plants. But as I say I'm new and confused.

My gut instinct is that it's just expecting too much for these plants, which felt pretty dry and they say have been coldstored, to then go out into the very hot outside and establish themselves. But they wouldn't sell them if it couldn't work. Maybe I didn't water enough? Or maybe they need shade.

Sure they would, just like the £ shops will sell you a hammer: it looks like a hammer, but use it a few times ...

July is not the month to be planting strawberries. As you've noticed, it's too hot and the leaves will be losing water faster than the roots can take it up.

April is the best month for planting, or early Sept

Thanks. Well I learnt my lesson, I won't buy in the heat next time. I'll get some in September.

I bought some Fenella cold stored strawberry plants last week. They were doing a buy 10 get 10 free end of season sale, so I was tempted.
When they arrived there was actually 30, which I soaked in tepid water for a couple of hours before planting out and they were all showing signs of life within a couple of days.
I've kept them well watered since (with the help of our wonderful British weather) and they've already put on so much growth that you'd never guess they were newly planted.
If there's a good deal going then its always worth a punt in my book.
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
        Pumpkin pi.

Yeah this was a discount too. I didn't soak them before planting, I should have done that. Where did you get yours from?
