I have a tree in my garden that has dark purple leaves and the fruit looks like a cherry with a stone inside but the flesh is more than a plum, the fruit doesn't grow in clusters like cherries but on they own.

What is it and can I make jam with the fruit ??

Beleive it or not there is such a thing as a cherry plum! Maybe google would supply images? It makes excellent jam - we have some growing in old hederows here.

Look it up and it is a cherry plum trees, off to collect the fruit and make jam

Made my jam and it's scrummy, sweet with just the right amount of sharpness just hope my neighbour likes it, as I gave him a jar last night

It's a lovely flavour - you just have to be patient picking out the stones - but they come free reasonably easily.

I cut the cherries in half and simmered in 1/2 pint of water and then ladled out the stones and some of the skins and then when I skimmed the scum off the top removed any remaining stones I missed and some of the skins

I posted on this a couple of weeks ago I think. Found another one in the front garden this week, nigra type, much darker than the one in the back. So now have several kilos of cherry plums swimming round in 40% preserving alcohol (warm oven method) and loads of cherry jelly and some cherry plum sauce for ice cream

From the description, I wonder if they are mirabelles.

They are tiny plum-like fruits.

Mirrabelles are usualy green or yellow so I'm thinking cherryplum, in Germany we had a smallish tree in the garden, less than 2 meters, Father thought it was an Almond and when it fruited he was convinced, the fruit became larger and larger ripening to yellow with a pink blush.....wow those peaches were the best ever, we also had a couple of cherry trees and a gage, now that was a very big tree about 60' as I recall, the nearest fruit to the ground were about 20' up, we didnt dare to try and pick them!!
