  • Brown Turkey Fig

I have an established Fig tree against a fence in my garden which was here when we moved in 11 years ago. Being at the end of the garden it was neglected and just left to grow. Thinking kill or cure, last Autumn I decided to cut the tree right back to the main trunk and secure the trunk to the fence. My thoughts were if it survived, all well and good and if it passed on to the big Fig plantation in the sky then no worries. The tree did survive and started to grow from late spring this year. What I have noticed is there is embryo fruit on just about every new branch. Now logic tells me that these fruits are not going to grow and ripen in the next few weeks before the tree starts to become dormant so what I would like to know is will these fruits survive a winter which are normally mild in this part of the country or should all fruit be removed in the Autumn allowing the tree to fruit again next year.

If anyone can help me with this I would be grateful.

    Best regards,
    Greg

take off any fruit bigger than a pea as these will not be able to overwinter, the small ones will start to grow in the spring, and make sure they are open to the sun to help them develop nicely, if you break off the stem ends in Feb this will encourage more fruit to grow..

Leave all embryo fruits no bigger than pea size alone, these are next years figs.
Remove anything bigger than a pea as they will not ripen and will not survive the winter.
Remember that figs in their native land can have 3 crops a year, but in the uk, it takes first year to produce the pea size fruit, these will then overwinter, grow and ripen by the autumn of next year (weather permitting).
Feed the soil, not the plants.
      (helps if you have cluckies)
