  • Blueberries and Ants

    Hi,
Newbie here with a few questions on blueberries.

Have planted few plants (BlueCorp/GoldTraube/Briggite and Earliblue) since November (in SE). Initially the plants were doing well and started flowering and growing.. The last weeks however have noticed that:

    - the colour of the leaves is mostly reddish. I am adding ericaceous compost, sulphur chips and acid plants food (And coffee grounds when possible) . Up to 1-2 weeks ago I was not watering them much. Could it be due to that?

-can see that in some of the plants there are lots of ants moving around. Have not seen any aphids and cannot see the ants going to any specific place. I am watering around the plant and digging in order to make them go away but cant see much difference. Have mulched alot so i am suspecting that they might be hiding in the mulch? Any "organic" solution to this problem?

-Can see some smalls insects flying around the plants.
-Can also see spider web in one of the plants.

Do you see any risks with any of the aboves? I can see that some of the flowers are loosing their leaves so not sure if this is an issue.
Do the fruits gets created from the flowers?

    Have added few photos..

    Many thanks for your help,
    A

Blueberries are meant to have a reddish tinge, so don't worry about that. Never had an issue with ants on mine though. Be aware that flowers will lose their petals once pollinated, so that might just mean they've done their job and fruit is on it's way (can take a while before they become visible though, so be patient)

Hopefully someone can assist with the ants shortly

Thanks AllInContainers. Was really worried about the colour because in February the leaves were all green so was suprised about the change..

Not sure what to do with the ants. I would not like to use ants poison if there are safer alternatives out there.

Can the ants damage the fruits or the flowers?

So ants have not stopped going up and down the tree. The tree has put some growth but now i can see that some leaves have red spots or are slightly eaten.

Looked more carefully and found brownish spots on many stems. When i pressed these they had a yellow liquid inside.. Tried to clean as much as I could but the spots are very difficult to see..

If I killed these, can the ants bring new aphids immediately (or do the aphids appear on their own) or could there be small aphids that i cant see and will appear soon?

I sprayed with water but these were not slipping from the branches.. Do i need to use the JET option of the hose?

Lastly, I really cant find anymore the ants hole. Can they be in the mulch?
