  • Blackcurrant bushes

Are these bushes dying or do they just need pruning? I do think they are a bit close together. The leaves have gone brown and crispy.

    Thanks

      It looks like blackcurrant rust.

I'm not really sure it is rust Dorothy, it may well be something else.
A clearer photo of the back of the leaf would be good.
Is it on just one plant? Does every stem have the same problem, did it crop well and how long has it looked like that?
Perhaps someone else might shed a little light?

Didn't crop so well this year. But not 'old bushes', 2 years.
It is on more than one bush
Just happened, well only noticed today

It's almost like 'autumn time' when the leaves drop off. There are still 'buds/shoots, on the branches.

I'll go take a photo of the back of the leaf tomorrow, and have a closer inspection

It just seems to be too early to be dying back, I've got a couple of very early fruiting blackcurrants and they have no leaf discolouration yet.

Hoping some other grapes may have any ideas??

No chilly nights, still very warm here Kent, no lower than 14 degs.

I'll try and get more photos when rain stops.

Cud be this, I'm inclined to really prune them hard, remove all 'infected' bits, give them a spray with 'something' article doesn't suggest, and maybe remove one of the bushes, cos they did get much bigger than I thought. A couple were 'new' bushes, but a few more were from cuttings given to me from one of the old chaps on allotment, these ones seem worse affected. Don't know know if that might have made any difference.

We have to do some work on our fruit cage this autumn winter, cos the bushes grew so big thru the netting, so wud be good time.

I will try get more photos.

                      Thanks for your help

                          Blackcurrant 'rust?' Again

Had a closer look this morning, it does look like rust, the underside of the leaf is a beautiful 'rust' colour. The leaves of the bushes in the middle are definitely about to fall off, the actual branches, look ok and have buds, no bugs or beasties obvious. I took a few close up piccies.

Am I best to just chop these back now, and maybe remove a bush? To give more space?

                          Thanks

Have you got any stems that are rust free? I think I would prune hard. Clean up all the leaves and give them a good mulch and keep your fingers crossed.

How many bushes have you got? I don't think spacing will help but my bushes have around 4ft between each one.
