  • Apples - any native Yorkshire eating varieties?

    Hi,

My 4 year old daughter has announced that she would like us to get an apple tree! We are keen that she eats more fruit so want to oblige! It would be nice to get a variety that is from Yorkshire, where we live. We have an allotment so pollination should be ok.

I have done an internet trawl and can only find Yorkshire Greening which is a cooker. Does anyone know of a Yorkshire eater please?

    Thanks

I believe orangepippin and his website (Fruit trees for sale - buy online from the fruit tree specialists) are based very close to York so I suggest a visit there. That way you can chose from many a variety.

NAtional Fruit Collection and a search for Yorkshire in Apples gives:

          National Fruit Collection

          1. Yorkshire Aromatic ›››
          2. Yorkshire Beauty:
Preferred name is Greenup's Pippin ›››
          3. Yorkshire Beefing:
Preferred name is Winter Majetin ›››
          4. Yorkshire Cockpit:
          Preferred name is Cockpit ›››
          5. Yorkshire Goose Sauce:
Preferred name is Yorkshire Greening ›››
          6. Yorkshire Greening ›››
          7. Yorkshire Greeting:
Preferred name is Yorkshire Greening ›››
          8. Yorkshire Margaret:
          Preferred name is Yellow Margaret
          9. Yorkshire Pippin:
Preferred name is Round Winter Nonsuch
          10. Yorkshire Queen:
Preferred name is Hambledon Deux Ans ›››
          11. Yorkshire Robin:
Preferred name is French Crab ›››

Yorkshire Aromatic reads as if a cooker.
You would have to contact them and they will graft onto any rootstock.

If you look up Brogdale they have an open day in April, but it is a bit far to travel.

FB is right. Realistically Ribston Pippin is the only true dessert variety from Yorkshire.

Ironically it almost certainly originates from France.

Buy her something delicious, wherever from . . . otherwise she'll prefer the imported apples in Yorkshire supermarkets to an unpopular local variety. I suggest Sunset. From Kent.
