  • Apple tree in pot - size?

I just picked up a Red windsor on an M27 in a 11.5L pot.

Although not a good keeper, everything else seemed to fit the bill (grows well where I am, reasonable disease resistance )

One question I didn't ask before buying it, is - will the current pot do this year? Should I repot it up a size each year?

Not sure where it'll be finally planted, so for now it'll have to stay in a pot.

    Thanks

M27 is a very dwarfing rootstock that won't grow particularly quickly. It'll probably be fine for this year, but probably best if next winter it gets a change of compost and a new pot.

When finally planted, it will need a good mulching and feeding each year. Final size will be no more than about 6ft after several years even in a good soil. It may need staking if in an exposed situation.

great stuff thanks FB. I chose the M27 as I wanted it as a 'Patio' (sized) tree! Most of the others were MM106, some fan/esp trained, which did look nice, but the varieties weren't particularly suited to south wales (I asked previous about 'em!)
