  • Am I a fruit loop?

When I first started growing it was mainly all veg, a very few flowers to attract pollinators and a few strawberries was my fruity treat. Now when I look around my garden all I see is fruit. Don't get me wrong I love fruit and I can't wait to be able to pick it all instead of buying it but I wonder if I'm (slightly) obsessed with fruit.

My collection now consists of pear, cherry, plum and fig trees, blackthorn, raspberry (autumn, summer and yellow varieties), blackberry, tayberry, loganberry, pink, white, red and blackcurrants, gooseberry, jostaberry, blueberry, rhubarb, strawberry, framberry, pineberry, cranberry and rhubarb

I am still in the market for an apple tree, might hold out for next year to get one of those and I have my eye on a boysenberry. Other than that I think I'm going to have to ban myself from buying anymore fruit

    You're a Fruit moop.
I have all the same fruits as you plus worcesterberry, Japanese wineberry, youngberry, elderberry and lots of apples.
Fruits are a lot less work than annual veg and they add more structure to a garden. tends to be more expensive in the shops too so its win,win

The longer I garden the more into fruit I'm getting. I have red, white and blackcurrants, blackberry, blueberry, strawberrys, alpine strawberrys, raspberrys, Chilean guavas, rhubarb, gooseberrys, a loganberry (could be a tayberry...labelling issues) and Ive just bought a patio cherry tree.

Next year I want to add a small apple tree and a Japanese wineberry and possibly a honeyberry and fig tree.

I love how little work they are once the initial preparation is done.

I'm going to wish I'd never started this thread cos people are just gonna add all the stuff that I'd never thought of. To be fair I have looked at Chilean guava before but managed to resist up to now. Have you had any fruit from that or the honeyberry yet? Just wondering about the taste and if they are anything special.

I'd prefer a nectarine tree, anyone got one of those? No, mustn't get ditracted, the only tree I'm allowed is an apple. What kind of apple trees does everyone have? I quite fancy one of those that has pink flesh.

Guilty of not reading posts properly, you did say it was on your wishlist

What are your reasons for wanting a honeyberry? I think the fruit is strange looking and it kind of puts me off wanting it ha ha. Does anyone have one that could comment on taste etc?

                  I'm a fruit loop too
                  Pear tree
                  Two cherry trees
                  Fig twig
                  Two plum trees
                  Raspberries
Apple with two different apples on it (can't remember which, I have the label in a tin the shed)
                  Four black currants
                  Two red currants
                  Two gooseberries
                  Strawberries
Grape vine in the greenhouse (still not sick of saying that la-di-da!)
                  Rhubarb
A lot haven't produced yet as they are still new, at some point in my life I will be over laden with fruit, but it will be a while.
Still room for more though, I like the sound of these weird berries you all have though didn't realise we had so much until I began my list!
Forgot blackberries that hang over from next door, but they still count as I pick them as they don't!

You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!

The fruit from mine is quite sharp - much sharper than blueberries, which is what people normally compare them to. To me, a better comparison is with raspberries or blackberries. I'd say that it's nice to try for variety, but if you have limited space you're probably better off planting raspberries.

Me too! I have (hope I don't forget anything):

                        Apples
                        Plums
                        Cherries
                        Medlar
                        Raspberries (summer and autumn fruiting)
                        Blackberries
                        Gooseberries
Red currants and white currants (they're the same species!)
                        Black currants
                        Jostaberry
Strawberries (alpine + cultivated, mostly as a groundcover under other shrubs)
                        Elder (does that count?)
                        Japanese wineberries
                        Honeyberry
                        Chokeberries
                        Artic kiwi / manchurian gooseberry
                        Grape
Flowering quince (does this count? I grow it for the fruit...)
Rhubarb (technically not a fruit, but people act like it is)
Gojiberry (I've yet to get a single fruit, the damn things never flower unless it's right before a hard frost)
                        Blueberries
Lemon (in the conservatory it's perfectly happy and low maintenance. I have it more because my wife loves the scent when it flowers than for the fruit)
                        Ramanas and dog roses

What I don't grow (lemons aside) is anything that needs too much coddling in the UK climate, or which requires me to do a bumblebee impression. No peaches, nectarines or apricots for me, although I have been tempted to try some of the later flowering apricots on occasion.

This is prunus padus, I guess, not prunus avium? Are those even edible? There are some near my work.

What do these taste like? I've never tried them.

I fancied a honeyberry as its a bit different and I like to buy things you cant buy easily plus from what I've read they fruit earlier than many fruit and taste good, though what I'm reading on here is making me waiver!
